Castle
CoveStripe

A stripe drawn for one house on Middle Harbour — in the bushland suburb Walter Burley Griffin built after he finished designing Canberra.

The man who
drew Canberra
drew this too.

In 1912 Walter Burley Griffin won the competition to design Australia's federal capital. In 1919 he bought 263 hectares of Middle Harbour bushland — the peninsulas that became Castlecrag, Middle Cove and Castle Cove — and set about building suburbs that sat quietly inside the landscape instead of flattening it. Sandstone left where it stood. Filtered views. Nothing dominating the bush.

Our Capital Lines collection was drawn from Griffin's Canberra. So when Three Birds Renovations asked for a stripe for a house in Castle Cove, it turned out we were already working in his other suburb.

The brief was narrow: a stripe that could hold its own against deep red joinery without shouting back at it. What came out was hand-drawn and deliberately irregular — each line breaking and feathering the way pigment does when it's dragged across a woven ground. From across a room it behaves almost like a plain. Up close it earns a second look.

Six colours carry the entire space: chalk white on the walls, warm creams through the joinery, oak underfoot, and one deep true red doing all the work.
